Whitecliff Your nearest shops are a 2 minute walk away in Whitecliff. The Mace shop has just about all emergency food items you might need. There is also a post office, hairdressers, an excellent Butchers and a great watersports and clothing shop.
Ashley Cross Village is a 5 minute walk away and is
home to about 60 shops and businesses. There is a main post office, train
station (which goes to poole, wareham, bournemouth, london etc), water sports,
running and cycling shops as well as an excellent toyshop called Jammy Joes -
where I work! There are numerous good bars, restaurants, clubs and pubs.
Poole Town Centre If you are walking into town, go
through Poole Park as this is the quickest route. This will take
between 15-25 minutes depending on your route. The Dolphin shopping
centre has the usual range of high street shops. Alternatively, take
the train from parkstone station or catch a bus from Commercial Road.
Otherwise if you’re heading to town by car, parking is easy
as long as you are happy to head for the main car parks.
Bournemoth Town Centre is 4 miles away.
Poole Park is a 5 minute walk from the house. Ideal for finding peace and quiet tranquility amongst the shade of the trees or venture further into the park to enjoy a busier atmosphere. During the summer there are many events held in the park including the Poole Park Fest - a great 2 day free festival that is child freindly.
Other Attractions include: A 55 acre lake, public tennis courts, children’s playground, putting green, crazy golf, boating, cricket ground, remote control boating area, Poole Park Railway, Cygnet Continental Cafe Bar and Gus Gorilla’s Jungle Playground - a huge indoor adventure playground suitable for children up to 12 years. There is an excellent public swimming pool called the Dolphin Swimming Pool situated between the edge of the park and the and Dolphin shopping centre.
Whitecliff Park is a 5 minute walk from the house and offers spectacular views of Brownsea Island and the Purbecks. There is a good playground in the park and this is a great place to kick a football around. Cycle or walk along the harbourside promenade to Poole Quay. This only takes 15-20 minutes and is a lovely walk - made all the more worthwhile if the French market is trading. Fishing, cycling and dog walking are all permitted along the harbourside park.
Harbourside Park. Is a 5 minute walk from the house. This is between Whitecliff Park and the Quay - its main feature is the skate park and the tranquil sea views over the harbour.
Compton Acre Gardens is a 5 minute drive away in Lilliput. Venture through 10 acres of themed gardens. Great vistas, and cafes. Good for all ages. There is a charge to get in.
Poole, Bournemouth and Studland are renowned for the quality of their sandy beaches and clear water. All are a short drive from the house. There are at least 16 beach car parks in Poole and Bournemouth all within 5-20 minute drive away, covering Sandbanks, Branksome Chine, Alum Chine, through to Bournemouth, Boscombe and Southborne. Alternatively, you can catch a bus from Whitecliff shops (2 min walk away) which will take you to any of the beach access points in Sandbanks. It will also take you over the ferry to Studland and on to Swanage. Unless you are a very early riser forget trying to take your car on the ferry to Studland as you can wait for anything up to 2 hours in queues. If you need to take the car, park near the ferry and go over as a foot passenger. However, it is well worth venturing over there as it is very unspoilt and the beaches are fantastic. Do head for the Shell Bay restaurant for refreshments - it is a magical spot and the last toilet or refreshment point for miles. Most beaches have safe swimming areas with RNLI lifeguards, the option to hire sun beds, deck chairs, volley ball equipment, and beach huts. Do not miss the free fireworks display and evening of family entertainment on Thursday nights throughout August. Head for Sandbanks beach.
Poole and Bournemouth offer something for everyone. There are literally 1000s of restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs to choose from. If you’re looking for something within staggering distance of Fig Tree House there are plenty of restaurants and pubs in Ashley Cross. For live music check out Mr Kyps Live Music Venue or The Central Pub both only a 5 minute walk away. POOLE QUAY Poole Quay is a 20 - 25 minute walk from the house. There are numerous pubs, clubs and restaurants at the quay. Every Thursday evening in July and September go and enjoy the free live music, street entertainment and a spectacular firework finale. If you can’t make it out you’ll be able to see the fireworks from the balcony! If you’re into motor bikes head to the quay on Tuesday evenings for Bike Night night or if cars are your thing, Dream Machine Night happens on a Fridays from May - August. Don’t miss picking up a boat cruise from the quay - a trip round Brownsea Island helps you get your head round the size of the harbour. POOLE LIGHTHOUSE If a bit of culture and art is what you fancy then definitely head to Poole Arts Centre called the Lighthouse. It is the largest outside London and has fantastic facilities. Not only does it host the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, but live music, theatre, films and art exhibitions. It also runs a range of craft, film and photography sessions for kids throughout the Summer. These are very reasonably priced and very well run. Children over 5 can be left unaccompanied for the session.
If you’re here for the watersports you couldn’t have picked a better spot.
Windsurfing & Kitesufting: - There are at least 6 windsurfing, kitesurfing and kayaking shops and schools within a mile of the house. The house has storage for up to 4 windsurf boards and kit or 2 kayaks. Otherwise, it is very easy to hire kit.
Diving: - Several dive clubs operate in the area and many use the slip at the boat yard in Turks Lane - a 5-10 minute walk from the house. There is a dive shop in the boat yard where you can hire equipment and get your tanks filled - air and NITROX. The house has a locker in the front garden that is suitable for tanks and kit boxes.
Sailing: - There are numerous excellent sailing schools that operate in the area. There are a couple of public slipways in Poole but if you are thinking of bringing your own day boat you will need to make arrangements with a local boat yard. Mitchels in Turks Lane is the closest - 5 minutes away. There is also a chandlery and a friendly cafe in the boat yard. Otherwise walk to Salterns marina which is about a 15-20 minute walk away.
